Ahmadu Commassie Model Science Primary School, Katsina, organized a Sallah Durbar celebration to encourage pupils to return to school promptly after the Eid-el-Kabir holiday.
The event was held at the school premises in the Area Council neighborhood on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. According to the organizers, the aim of the celebration was to address the problem of low pupil attendance during the first week after school resumes from holidays, a period commonly referred to by some as the “wasted week.”
The programme began with an opening prayer led by the District Head of Tudun Wada, Alhaji Janaidu. Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), Alhaji Usman Isiyaku Tarnon Katsina, commended the school management for sponsoring the programme. He also called on members of the community to continue supporting the school and its committee.
In her remarks, the Education Secretary of Katsina Local Government, Dr. Halima Umar, praised the school management and teachers for their commitment to providing quality education and moral training. She described the school as one of the outstanding schools in Nigeria, noting that several international non-governmental organizations conduct educational programmes there.
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina Local Government Area, Alhaji Mustapha Musa, said the party leadership would provide every necessary support to the school. He noted that he is also a former pupil of the school and commended its teachers for their dedication. Similarly, the representative of the Katsina Local Government Chairman, Councillor Zaharaddin Sirajo, delivered the chairman’s message and announced plans to organize competitions among 13 primary schools in the Gabas I ward, which he represents.
Former pupils of the school from the 2012 set also contributed to the success of the Sallah Durbar celebration. Speaking on their behalf, Sagir Shota presented exercise books and other prizes prepared for the groups that emerged first, second, and third based on decoration, presentation of Sallah Durbar traditions, discipline, and good conduct. The Tarnon Katsina House came third, the Dr. Halima Umar Group finished second, while the Emir of Katsina Group emerged first.
Speaking at the event, the Headmistress of the school, Hajiya Hadiza Tukur Saulawa, thanked guests and stakeholders for their continued support. She also commended the male and female teachers for their efforts in ensuring the success of the programme. In his remarks, the Director of Quality Assurance, Malam Mustapha Aliyu, said the Sallah Durbar celebration was introduced to encourage pupils to resume school early after holidays and to reduce the loss of learning time during the first week of school resumption.
