The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria, Shehu Musa Gabam, has raised concerns over the withdrawal of his securities without explanation, alleging intimidation of the opposition.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday 16, March, 2025, Gabam emphasized the importance of upholding principles of fairness, justice, and respect for human rights. He expressed disappointment that despite following due processes, his securities were withdrawn, noting that this is not the standard of leadership Nigeria should strive for.
Gabam drew parallels with the past, where opposition leaders, including the current President, were not subjected to similar harassment and intimidation. Instead, they were allowed to express their views and participate in the democratic process without fear of retribution.
Hikaya Newspaper reports that the SDP chairman also brought attention to the case of a corps member, Raye, who is facing similar intimidation. He urged the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) authorities to handle her case through civil means rather than intimidation, promoting a fair and transparent approach.
Gabam concluded by emphasizing the need for a society that values and respects the rights of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation or views. He called on Nigerians to work together to uphold democracy and promote fairness and justice.
