NANS Joint Campus Committee unveiles a new advocacy campaign

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Kano Axis, through the Office of the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Muddassir Hamza Dankaka, has launched a new advocacy campaign titled “Education Over Expulsion.”

Hikaya Newspaper reports that the initiative calls on tertiary institutions in Kano and across Nigeria to prioritize academic reform and mentorship over punitive measures such as student expulsion.

In a statement signed by the Office of the PRO, NANS JCC Kano Axis observed that many young people involved in social vices and criminal activities in Kano are often school dropouts victims of an education system that failed to offer them a second chance. “When you expel a student, you don’t just remove them from school you push them toward the streets, and the street rarely forgives,” the statement read.

The association urged all tertiary institutions, the Kano State Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and other education stakeholders to adopt compassionate and reform-driven academic policies that allow struggling students to repeat a year instead of facing outright expulsion. “A failed grade should not be a death sentence. Give our students the chance to rebuild. Most of the crimes among our youth are committed by those who once sat in classrooms but were denied another opportunity,” it added.

As part of the #EducationOverExpulsion campaign, NANS JCC Kano plans to organize campus engagements, policy dialogues, and community media awareness across tertiary institutions in the state to promote student retention, mentorship, and academic guidance. The association also called on the media, youth organizations, and policymakers to support the movement, emphasizing that investing in second chances is investing in peace, productivity, and purpose urging, “Don’t expel their potential. Reform it.”
