“Peace Talks with Bandits Without Surrender of Weapons Unacceptable”

A leading political figure in Katsina State and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa, has criticized the peace negotiations with bandits, saying it is meaningless unless they surrender their weapons.

He stressed that armed criminals continue to pose a serious threat to society through killings, kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and destruction of public and private property.

In an interview with journalists, Dr. Inuwa explained that peace talks cannot benefit citizens if bandits are still allowed to keep their weapons while enslaving villagers by forcing them into farming or other labor. He emphasized that the government must ensure honesty and accountability in any peace process by collecting all weapons from repentant bandits to guarantee lasting security.

Dr. Inuwa further challenged the Katsina State Government’s claim of “improved security,” noting that attacks continue in parts of the state. He accused the authorities of politicizing security matters, citing reports such as the alleged killing of 300 bandits by security forces, which he described as exaggerated and misleading.

The former Secretary to the State Government also faulted the use of public funds, condemning heavy spending on urban road rehabilitation in Katsina city instead of investing in education, healthcare, and security, which he said are of greater importance to rural communities.

Dr. Inuwa concluded by clarifying that raising concerns about public issues should not be mistaken for political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections. He stated that his interventions are driven by genuine concern for Katsina and Nigeria at large, stressing that leaders must speak out on issues that threaten the welfare of the people to ensure peace and sustainable development.
