Nigerian Economy on the Mend, Says Minister Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has declared that the Nigerian economy is steadily improving under President Tinubu’s administration.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that Idris attributed the progress to the wide-ranging reforms being implemented across various sectors, citing landmark policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Abuja, Idris acknowledged that challenges persist, but emphasized that the administration is making steady progress. He noted that international rating agencies have given Nigeria “pass marks” and observed upward trends in economic management. The Minister also highlighted the Students Loan Scheme, which has enabled over 300,000 Nigerian students to access education, with the Federal Government covering tuition fees and providing upkeep support.

Idris further stated that security challenges are being addressed decisively, with sustained successes recorded in the fight against violent crimes. He urged the media to support the Armed Forces in their efforts to combat crime and safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity, emphasizing the need to highlight the successes and sacrifices of security personnel.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, encouraging the media to promote positive milestones and achievements of the administration while holding the government accountable through constructive criticism. He assured the Guild of Editors that the administration is committed to press freedom and freedom of expression, and pledged to work closely with the media to foster collaboration and bridge gaps between government and the press.

Idris promised to engage with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to consider the Guild’s Law Reform Report, and to set up a committee within his ministry to study the report thoroughly. He congratulated the newly elected executives of the Guild and assured them of his commitment to promoting a freer and more enabling environment for media practice in Nigeria.
