SDP Marks Democracy Day with Call for Accountability

The Social Security Democratic Party (SDP) of Katsina State has marked Democracy Day with a call for accountability and transparency in governance.

In a press release signed by Mustapha Muhammed Kurfi, State Secretary of the party, the SDP expressed disappointment with the current state of democracy in Katsina State, citing insecurity, suppression of free speech, and political interference.

The party reflected on the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was annulled by the military junta, and noted that despite the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day, the ideals of good governance, social justice, and inclusion for which Chief M.K.O. Abiola fought are yet to be achieved.

The SDP highlighted the worsening security crisis in Katsina State, with the state having the highest fatalities due to banditry in the Northwest. The party also raised concerns about the mysterious death of Major A.L. Ibrahim, Commander of the Katsina Community Watch Corps in Dandume Local Government, who had alleged collusion between security personnel and bandits.

The party further alleged suppression of free speech and political interference, citing the removal of the Chairman of the NURTW Dutsinma Local Government Branch for prioritizing the safety of commuters over political interests.

The SDP demanded immediate and transparent investigation into Major Ibrahim’s death and all allegations of security personnel collusion with criminal elements. The party also called for the protection of civil society leaders, union officials, and all citizens who speak out for justice and security.

The party urged the state and federal governments to take concrete actions to end the reign of terror inflicted by banditry and restore peace to communities. The SDP reaffirmed its commitment to the ideals of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and called on citizens to demand a government that serves and protects its people.

The party’s demands and commitment to the ideals of democracy and good governance are a clarion call to citizens to hold leaders accountable and demand better governance. As the nation marks Democracy Day, the SDP’s message is a reminder of the importance of protecting democratic values and promoting good governance.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that the SDP’s call for accountability and transparency is a timely reminder of the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare and security of citizens. As the nation moves forward, it is essential to ensure that democratic institutions are strengthened, and leaders are held accountable for their actions.
