Kaduna State University Reopens After ASUU Suspends Strike

The Kaduna State University (KASU) has reopened after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its strike action. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, announced this at a press conference, attributing the development to the intervention of Governor Uba Sani.

Professor Musa disclosed that Governor Sani approved a ₦50 million monthly standing order for staff welfare support and established a negotiating team to address outstanding issues. The Governor also released ₦146 million to pay withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances. Additionally, he approved the retention of a certain percentage of the university’s internally generated revenue (IGR) to enhance financial autonomy.

The Vice Chancellor commended Governor Sani for his sensitivity to the plight of students, staff welfare, and the condition of education. He noted that the Governor’s measures were bold and unprecedented, demonstrating his commitment to education in the state. A high-level negotiation team, chaired by Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe, has been constituted to continue dialogue with university unions.

The retention of IGR will enable the university to manage its finances more effectively, enhancing its autonomy. This move is expected to improve the overall quality of education and services provided by the university.

Professor Musa called on parents, guardians, students, staff, and the general public to support the Governor’s efforts. He emphasized that together, they can restore Kaduna State University to its former glory as a center of learning, progress, and hope.

With the strike suspended and the university reopened, students and staff can now return to their academic activities. The development marks a significant step towards normalcy and stability in the university.
