Fake EFCC Operatives Arrested in Niger State

The Niger State Police Command has arrested five suspects for impersonating Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives and abducting students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. The suspects, residents of Abuja, were arrested on May 13 after police operatives trailed their vehicle to Suleja Road.

According to the police, the suspects abducted two students from their lodge off-campus and demanded a ransom of N10 million, later negotiating to N500,000. The suspects used fake EFCC ID cards, which were designed at a shop in Nyanya, Abuja. They also used electric tasers as guns and collected five phones from the students.

The police spokesperson, Superintendent Wasi’u Abiodun, stated that the suspects were arrested after a tip-off. During interrogation, they confessed that they were invited by informants who provided them with information about the students. The informants, including a dismissed soldier with a criminal record and an ex-convict, were also arrested.

The five suspects are currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. They will be charged in court for prosecution once the investigation is complete. The police are working to uncover more details about the suspects’ activities and possible connections to other crimes.

The Niger State Police Command has demonstrated its commitment to tackling crime in the state. The arrest of the fake EFCC operatives is a significant breakthrough, and the police will continue to work to ensure the safety and security of citizens, particularly students.
