Nigeria’s Flying Eagles failed to reach the final of the 18th Africa U20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 1-0 loss to South Africa’s Amajita. The decisive goal came midway through the second half when substitute goalkeeper Ajia Yakub miscalculated a pull-out, allowing South African defender Tylon Smith to head the ball into the net.
The Flying Eagles dominated the game with intense pressure but lacked coordination and composure in the final third, failing to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. Forward Kparobo Arierhi had several chances, including a teasing cross by Clinton Jephta in the 22nd minute, which he couldn’t head into the net. He also missed the target from six yards with only the goalkeeper to beat on the half-hour.
Despite their best efforts, the Flying Eagles were unable to find the back of the net. The team’s chances were further complicated when goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt suffered an injury on the hour mark. Yakub’s mistake five minutes after his teammate’s mishap proved costly, as Smith’s header sealed the win for Amajita.
Coach Aliyu Zubairu took full responsibility for the team’s defeat, acknowledging that the squad needs a major overhaul ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. “I take full responsibility for our failure to reach the final. As head coach, the blame rests on me,” Zubairu said.
The Flying Eagles will now play the loser of the second semi-final between hosts Egypt and Morocco for the bronze medals on Sunday. Despite their loss, the team will look to regroup and finish the tournament on a high note.
The third-place match promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams vying for a medal. The Flying Eagles will need to regroup and refocus if they are to claim the bronze medal.
