The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has trained its staff in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on data protection and compliance to improve the security of voter information and official records.
The one-day workshop was held on June 6, 2026, at the INEC FCT Conference Hall. The training was organized by INEC FCT and facilitated by data protection expert, Mr. Anthony Abodunrin Oni, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Human Resources Management.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the FCT, represented by the Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Bimbo Oladunjoye, said the training was designed for staff responsible for managing voter data. She explained that the workshop aimed to update participants on data protection laws and the consequences of violating them, while encouraging staff to strengthen integrity and accountability in handling public information.
The training was conducted in two sessions covering data protection rights, key principles, practical guidelines for managing official information, and compliance requirements under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Participants also took part in group exercises and case studies on voter register management and the handling of sensitive documents.
Facilitator Anthony Oni highlighted major risks such as unauthorized access, data leakage, and improper storage or disposal of records. He urged staff to adopt best practices in password management, access control, secure filing systems, and prompt reporting of any data breaches. The workshop ended with the presentation of souvenirs to the facilitator and a group photograph session.
