Pregnant women are facing dire suffering due to hot weather, according to Dr. Abubakar Halliru Kankiya, Provost of Cherish College of Nursing Science. In an interview on Hikaya TV’s “Lafiya Uwar Jiki” program, Dr. Kankiya highlighted several diseases and health issues that can arise during this period.
Diseases and Health Risks:
Dr. Kankiya identified malaria, heat-related illnesses, Zika virus, Oropouche virus, and Listeria infection as major health concerns for pregnant women. He explained that malaria can lead to severe illness, preterm labor, and low birth weight, while heat-related illnesses can cause heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration. Zika virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, can cause birth defects, and Oropouche virus can lead to fever, headache, and joint pain.
Protective Measures:
To protect themselves, Dr. Kankiya advised pregnant women to stay cool by drinking plenty of water, avoiding overexertion, and using cooling devices like fans. He also emphasized the importance of mosquito-borne illness prevention, such as wearing protective clothing and applying EPA-registered insect repellents. Additionally, he stressed the need for food safety, including cooking meat thoroughly and avoiding unpasteurized products.
General Health Tips:
Dr. Kankiya also highlighted the importance of general health measures, such as monitoring air quality, getting vaccinated, and practicing good hygiene. He advised pregnant women to stay informed about local weather forecasts and health advisories and to seek medical care if experiencing symptoms of heat-related illnesses or other health issues.
Prioritizing Self-Care:
The expert emphasized the need for pregnant women to prioritize self-care during hot weather, including resting, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activities. By taking these precautions, pregnant women can reduce their risk of contracting diseases and health issues associated with hot weather.
Dr. Kankiya’s warning serves as a reminder to pregnant women in Katsina State to take necessary precautions to protect their health during the hot weather season. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, they can minimize their risk of illness and ensure a healthy pregnancy.
