More than 200 individuals have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Katsina State.
The mass defection occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the SDP headquarters, where new members were welcomed and issued membership cards.
The defectors, predominantly women, expressed their desire for change and good governance under the leadership of Salman Ahamed Gafai. Gafai, a prominent figure in the SDP, has been vocal about the need for a new political approach in Katsina, particularly as the state gears up for the 2027 elections.
During his welcoming address, Alhaji Bello Adamu Safana, the chairman of SDP in the state, praised the new members for their commitment to the party’s vision. He emphasized that the SDP is prepared to provide effective leadership for the people of Katsina and Nigeria, highlighting the party’s growing influence in the region.
Hikaya Newspaper reports that Mustapha Mohammed Kurfi, the secretary of the party in the Katsina state, noted that the influx of new members reflects the SDP’s readiness to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming elections. He affirmed that Gafai and his team are strategically positioning the party to become a formidable contender in the political landscape.
Mustapha Sani Abdullahi, the Youth Leader of SDP in Katsina, remarked that the party’s headquarters has become a hub for political activists seeking a platform for meaningful change. He underscored the importance of youth involvement in shaping the future of Katsina’s politics.
Gafai reiterated his commitment to leading the charge for change, stating that the recent defections signify a collective desire for a new political style in the state. He assured supporters that the SDP would offer opportunities for politicians dedicated to addressing community issues and fostering positive transformation.
Political analysts suggest that the growing membership of the SDP could significantly alter the political dynamics in Katsina. With increasing acceptance among the youth, the SDP is poised to challenge the dominance of established parties in the 2027 elections, generating excitement and anticipation within the state’s political arena.
