Kaduna Extends Free CNG Mass Transit Scheme

The Kaduna State Government has extended its Free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mass Transit Scheme indefinitely, citing the programme’s overwhelming positive impact on residents across the state.

In a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani approved the extension after reviewing an assessment report on the initiative’s performance from July to November 2025. He disclosed that the fleet of 100 CNG-powered buses and 200 designated bus stops had transported more than 1.4 million passengers within five months, saving households an estimated ₦1.39 billion in transport expenses.

Maiyaki noted that the scheme currently serves over 18,000 passengers daily, describing it as one of the state’s most effective social intervention programmes. “These are not just numbers. They represent school fees paid, food on the table, small businesses staying afloat, and thousands of citizens moving daily without the burden of transport costs,” he said.

He added that Governor Uba Sani, after listening to testimonies from commuters during recent field assessments, directed that the free rides should continue without a fixed end date. The governor was quoted as saying that the visible relief and gratitude expressed by residents reinforce the need for leadership that reduces the burdens of ordinary citizens.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation as part of its broader human capital development agenda.
