Gov Radda Revives Historic Groundnut Mill After Two Decade

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has completed the full renovation of the historic Gidan Kuli groundnut oil mill in Kankia, marking a major milestone in the state’s effort to revive its agricultural economy.

Governor Radda emphasized the symbolic and practical value of the project, noting that the mill is not just a piece of economic infrastructure but a representation of Katsina’s agricultural heritage. “Groundnut production once defined Northern Nigeria’s prosperity, and we are determined to reclaim that legacy for our farmers and entrepreneurs,” he said.

The governor explained that the mill’s revival is in line with his administration’s broader agenda for economic diversification. “By restoring this processing centre, we are creating a guaranteed market for our groundnut farmers, generating employment opportunities, and establishing a foundation for value-added agricultural products that can compete nationally and internationally,” Radda stated.

The project has been placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Women Affairs to support women’s economic empowerment. According to Governor Radda, “We recognize the crucial role women play in agricultural processing. This centre will serve as an economic lifeline for thousands of women entrepreneurs across Katsina.”

The mill, originally established in 1992, has now been transformed into a modern Groundnut Processing Centre. The renovation was executed by the Katsina Youth Craft Village (KYCV), led by Engineer Kabir Abdullahi Kofar Soro. The overhaul included refurbishment of existing machinery, installation of modern equipment, and construction of administrative blocks, shops, and perimeter fencing.

With full operations expected to commence soon, the upgraded facility is projected to generate over 500 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to local agricultural production and economic activity in Katsina State.
