Katsina SDP Sees Surge in Membership Amid Political Realignments

The Katsina State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has welcomed over 6,000 new members in just one month, signaling a notable increase in the party’s influence as political dynamics shift in the region. This announcement was made by the state SDP Chairman, Alhaji Bello Adamu-Safana, during a press briefing on Tuesday evening.

Adamu-Safana highlighted that the party’s rising popularity has drawn the attention of key figures from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He indicated that several prominent members from these parties are in the process of defecting to the SDP. “We will soon receive some chieftains of the ruling APC and major opposition PDP into SDP,” he stated, emphasizing the influx of groups and individuals seeking an alternative political platform.

The chairman noted that the mass registration reflects a growing desire among citizens for a political party that aligns with their grassroots aspirations. He underscored the importance of this shift, suggesting that the SDP is becoming a viable option for those disillusioned with the current political landscape.

In light of the increased interest, Adamu-Safana issued a warning against individuals and groups forming unauthorized structures under the SDP name. He stressed that such actions are illegal and could result in legal repercussions. “This is very wrong. It is not coming from the party unless you are a party member, and the party allows you to form a structure,” he cautioned.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that the party is also in the process of issuing temporary membership cards, with plans to introduce permanent cards within the next two weeks. Adamu-Safana explained that these new cards will help revalidate the membership register and streamline the party’s organizational structure.

The chairman also reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency, inviting individuals and groups, particularly the youth, to join the party. “We are open and accessible to anyone who wants to join SDP. We will be just and fair to all, whether you’re a new member or seeking leadership through the party,” he asserted, reinforcing the party’s mission of justice, equity, and good governance.
