Alhaji Aliyu Maiwada Masanawa, the Katsina Zonal Vice Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), criticized the ongoing trend of politicians defecting from other parties to the SDP. He argued that this movement, particularly aimed at dismantling the current leadership, is not a viable solution for the party or the nation.
Masawana’s comments came during an interview on the Hikaya TV programme ‘Dimokuradiyya’, where he addressed the implications of these defections in light of the upcoming 2027 elections. He noted that while some politicians are joining the SDP to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) due to its perceived failures, others have ulterior motives that could undermine the party’s objectives. “Some are returning to destroy our leadership and build a new one, which would prevent us from achieving our goals for the nation,” he stated.
He further emphasized that the current APC government, led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is viewed as a “tyrant government serving the Western world.” Masanawa warned that the APC is unlikely to accept the registration of any new party that could threaten its hold on power. He expressed satisfaction with the SDP’s national leadership for rejecting attempts to dismantle its current structure, arguing that such actions could hinder the party’s efforts to provide effective governance.
Masanawa also called on the youth to engage more actively in political change, stressing that the presence of corrupt politicians in leadership positions is detrimental to Nigeria’s progress. He urged young people to start their political activism at the Ward level, where the foundation for effective politics is established. “If politics is not improved at the Ward, it will not be effective,” he asserted.
Reflecting on the political landscape in Katsina State, Masanawa praised the contributions of former governors Umaru Musa Yar’adua and Barr. Ibrahim Shehu Shema, highlighting their efforts to advance the state during their tenures. He lamented the current disruption in leadership movements and called for a return to the principles that fostered development in the region.
Masanawa also reiterated that the SDP remains open to welcoming individuals from other parties who genuinely wish to contribute to its mission under the leadership of Alhaji Bello Adamu Safana in Katsina State. He emphasized the importance of unity and commitment to good governance as the party prepares for the challenges ahead.
