The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed serious concerns regarding the low voter turnout during the Katsina State Local Government elections held on February 15, 2025.
The party’s leadership, headed by Alhaji Bello Adamu Safana, described the turnout as a reflection of widespread disillusionment among the electorate.
According to the SDP, the disappointing participation rates indicate a growing alienation of the populace from the current administration. The party argues that the state government has failed to address the needs of its citizens, leading to a significant erosion of public confidence in its leadership.
In a press release issued on February 18, 2025, the SDP condemned the election guidelines established by the Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission (KSIEC). The party claimed these guidelines imposed severe restrictions on political participation, undermining the integrity of the electoral process and violating the provisions of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
“The guidelines created an environment where aspirants from opposition parties, including the SDP, were effectively barred from contesting in the election,” the statement read. The party has taken legal action to challenge these guidelines, expressing confidence in the court’s ability to nullify what they termed a “charade” of an election.
Hikaya Newspaper reports that the SDP characterized the failure to uphold citizens’ rights to participate freely in the electoral process as a direct attack on democracy. They called for immediate reforms to restore public trust and ensure fair electoral practices in Katsina State.
In light of the poor voter turnout and alleged electoral malpractices, the SDP urged Governor Dikko Umar Radda to take decisive action to address the evident dissatisfaction among the people. The party emphasized the need for a government that listens to its constituents and responds to their needs.
The Social Democratic Party reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights of citizens and ensuring that governance in Katsina State reflects the true will and needs of its people.
