Bugaje Criticises Ruling Party at SDP National Convention

Chairman of the National Convention Committee of the Social Democratic Party, Usman Muhammad Bugaje, has criticised the ruling party, the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission over what he described as attempts to weaken opposition parties in Nigeria.

Bugaje made the remarks on Saturday during the SDP National Convention and Presidential Primary Election held at Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi. He said some national institutions, including the judiciary and INEC, had become tools in the hands of politicians, warning that efforts to block political opposition could harm Nigeria’s democracy.

As a former Special Adviser to Vice President of Nigeria, he also compared the current political situation to the era of late General Sani Abacha, saying past leaders who used power against the people eventually failed. He warned that history would judge those who support actions capable of undermining democracy and political competition in the country.

Bugaje welcomed party members and supporters who travelled from different parts of the country to attend the convention despite insecurity, rising fuel prices, unemployment, poor roads and electricity challenges. He said their presence showed commitment and determination to change the country’s condition through democratic means.

According to him, the theme of the convention, “Building a People’s Coalition to Secure Our Homeland and Defeat Poverty,” reflects the need for Nigerians to support a political alternative that can improve security and the welfare of citizens. He said democracy gives citizens the right to choose another party when the ruling party fails to meet the needs of the people.

Bugaje stated that the SDP is presenting itself as a credible alternative because of its ideology and the quality of its candidates. He said while many other political parties were presenting politicians linked to Nigeria’s past problems, the SDP was bringing forward fresh and competent candidates who want to improve the lives of Nigerians.

The SDP convention chairman further said the party may not have wealthy politicians or financial strength like some major parties, but noted that ideas, honesty and courage are more important in building a strong nation. He added that the party is reaching out to educated, patriotic and responsible Nigerians who are ready to rescue the country from poor leadership.

Bugaje urged Nigerians not to lose hope, saying meaningful change would require sacrifice, courage and faith in God. He called on citizens to unite and work together to save the country from poverty, insecurity and political failure, stressing that ordinary people have always played an important role in changing nations for the better.
