Pantami rejects APC consensus in Gombe

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State, Isa Ali Pantami, has rejected the adoption of Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 election.

Party stakeholders had earlier endorsed Gwamna as the consensus candidate during a meeting led by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya on Sunday. The decision was part of efforts to unite the party ahead of the election.

However, in a statement shared on Pantami’s verified Facebook page and signed by his aide, Suleiman Mohammed, the process was described as a “coronation” rather than a true consensus. He said the decision did not follow due process.

The statement argued that a valid consensus must involve all aspirants who purchased nomination forms. It explained that without their agreement, the party should conduct direct primaries instead of imposing a candidate.

Pantami’s camp also cited the Nigeria Electoral Act, saying it allows only two methods for candidate selection: consensus with full agreement of aspirants, or direct primaries where members vote. It added that the current process goes against the law and party guidelines.

Despite the disagreement, Pantami’s supporters were urged to remain calm and law-abiding. The statement added that legal steps may be taken, while preparations continue for possible direct primaries in the state.
