Medical practitioners in the country have been urged to strictly adhere to the ethics of medical practice to ensure effective service delivery.
The Vice-Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Professor Bashir Garba, made the call during the induction ceremony of 74 graduates from the College of Health Sciences for the 2022 and 2023 academic sessions.
He emphasized that medical ethics were the moral principles and values that guide the behavior of healthcare professionals in their interactions with patients, colleagues, and society.
He said healthcare professionals have a duty to promote the well-being and best interests of their patients.
The vice Chancellor explained that respect for patients rights to make informed decisions about their care is central to achieving the needed results in healing patients.
Professor Bashir Garba argued that Patients have the right to receive accurate and unbiased information about their treatment .
He added that medical professionals should treat patients with fairness, respect, and dignity, regardless of their background, culture, or socioeconomic status.
While administering the oath, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Fatima Kyari, urged the new doctors to view their roles as a call to serve humanity.
She explained that their positions were both a privilege and an opportunity, one that thousands of people in the country aspire to attain.
The Registrar also reminded them of their significant role in society, emphasizing that their journey in the medical field officially begins on the day of their induction.
Radio Nigeria in Sokoto reports that the inductees included 17 females and 57 males, who are indigenes of various parts of Nigeria.
The event was attended by the Chief Medical Director of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Anas Samir; the Chief of Staff, Kebbi State Government House, Alhaji Dahiru Maccido; the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Sokoto State Chapter, Dr. Faruk Shehu; and other dignitaries.
