KTARDA Begins Plan to Provide Improved Seeds for Farmers

The Katsina State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KTARDA) has commenced a comprehensive plan to produce and distribute various improved seeds for farmers ahead of the 2026 farming season.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that the initiative is part of the agency’s efforts to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food sufficiency across Katsina State.

The Managing Director of KTARDA, Alhaji Abubakar Dabo, disclosed this while speaking to journalists shortly after inspecting the Seed Multiplication Farm located in Tambu, Daura Local Government Area (Zone I) of Katsina State. He explained that the farm’s main objective is to cultivate improved seeds for distribution to farmers, which will help increase crop yields in the coming farming season.

According to Alhaji Dabo, the Tambu farm covers an area of 34 hectares, out of which the State Government  allocated 10 hectares to the Nigeria Police Force for special use. He said KTARDA had already demarcated the area and installed boundary beacons to ensure compliance with land-use regulations. Dabo added that the visit was to confirm that the fencing and demarcation work had been carried out according to specification.

The Managing Director further revealed that KTARDA operates similar seed multiplication farms across three zones of Katsina State: Tambu (Zone I) in Daura Senatorial Zone, Layin Minista and Daudawa (Zone II) in Funtua Senatorial Zone, and Tashar Nagulle, Kafin Soli, and Ladanawa (Zone III) in Katsina Senatorial Zone. He noted that the state government has been providing strong support to enhance these farms to ensure continuous production of high-quality seeds for both wet and dry season farmers.

Additionally, Dabo disclosed that the state government had allocated 2 hectares from the Tambu farm to Green World, a company based in Abuja, leaving 22 hectares under KTARDA’s control. He explained that after the current farming season, the agency will rehabilitate the degraded portions of the land by applying soil improvement treatments and will also allocate part of the farm to local farmers for cultivation. He emphasized that lack of access to improved seeds remains a major obstacle to agricultural growth, adding that KTARDA’s ongoing seed development program will help farmers obtain high-yield varieties for increased agricultural output across Katsina State.
