Customs, NAFDAC Strengthen Collaboration Against Fake Products

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit Zone A, has renewed its collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to combat counterfeit and substandard products.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that the agencies pledged to intensify their joint efforts to protect public health and strengthen inter-agency cooperation.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by NAFDAC officials on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Unit Head, Comptroller Muhammed Shuaibu, stressed the importance of the partnership, noting that it aligns with the vision of Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. He explained that the synergy is part of a broader agenda of collaboration with all government agencies, adding, “There is an urgent need to eradicate substandard products, and we are committed to following through on every agreement signed at the top level.”

NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martin Iluyomade, commended CGC Adeniyi’s leadership, describing him as “a man with excellence in his DNA.” He said the collaboration had led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both agencies. Similarly, NAFDAC’s Director of Ports Inspection, Dr. Olakunle Olaniran, emphasized that the agency is aligning with global standards, warning that importers of falsified products will soon have no choice but to invest in legitimate businesses.

The visit ended with the official handover of expired pharmaceutical products valued at ₦3.7 billion from the Customs Service to NAFDAC. The move, Comptroller Shuaibu noted, further demonstrated the agencies’ shared commitment to removing counterfeit and unsafe medications from circulation and safeguarding the health of Nigerians.
