Katsina Gov Pledges Support for Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting persons living with spinal cord injuries across the state. This assurance was made during a meeting with a delegation from the Association of Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries at Government House, Katsina.

The delegation, led by Lt. Hudu Usman (Rtd.), the Governor’s Special Assistant on Special Needs and a spinal injury survivor himself, appealed for assistance with medical bills, daily needs, and the completion of their administrative block at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC). The construction of the block had stalled due to a lack of funds, despite an initial boost from the Gwagware Foundation. The association, which has over 800 members across Katsina, highlighted the challenges they face, including the loss of at least ten members this year due to kidney issues caused by untreated urinary problems.

Governor Radda expressed concern over the financial challenges faced by spinal injury patients, particularly the cost of treatment. He pledged to complete the association’s administrative block at FMC, stating, “I’ve directed that the centre be finished as designed — no delays. It’ll serve as their base and help them access more support locally and internationally.” The Governor also promised medical and financial assistance for less privileged members, emphasizing that “no one should be left behind just because of a disability.”

A member of the association shared a personal story of becoming paralyzed 18 years ago after an accident while four months pregnant. Thanks to her family’s support, she received proper treatment, and her son is now an 18-year-old university student. The association’s request for help was facilitated by Hajiya Wasilla Sani Saulawa, who contacted the Governor on their behalf.

Governor Radda thanked the association for their courage and assured them of his government’s continued support. “This administration is for everyone — including the vulnerable. We’ll stand with you,” he said. The meeting was attended by top government officials and representatives of the association, marking a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by persons living with spinal cord injuries in Katsina State.
