NAWOJ to Collaborate with Police to Combat Gender-Based Violence

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Katsina State Chapter visited Commissioner of Police Bello Shehu on Thursday to discuss collaborative efforts in addressing gender-based violence and enhancing ethical journalism.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that this meeting highlights the association’s commitment to fostering partnerships between women journalists and law enforcement.

During the visit, NAWOJ Chairperson Hannatu Mohammed expressed gratitude for the warm reception from CP Shehu. She acknowledged the existing positive relationship between the police and journalists in Katsina, emphasizing the need for deeper collaboration to improve news reporting and public engagement on critical issues, particularly those affecting women.

Hannatu urged the Commissioner to intervene in the pressing issue of gender-based violence, calling for support to create a safer environment for women in the community. She commended CP Shehu for his achievements since taking charge of the police command and expressed NAWOJ’s readiness to support his efforts in ensuring the safety and rights of women.

In response, CP Bello Shehu appreciated the visit and praised NAWOJ for its commitment to ethical journalism. He reaffirmed the Katsina State Police Command’s dedication to maintaining a strong partnership with journalists and encouraged them to verify sensitive information with the Command before publication.

He assured that the police are taking proactive measures to address gender-based violence and other challenges faced by women. The visit concluded with a group photograph symbolizing the bond between NAWOJ and the Katsina State Police Command.

In a press release, NAWOJ Secretary Faith Awa Maji reiterated the association’s commitment to advocating for women’s rights and promoting ethical journalism standards while emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to combat gender-based violence in the community.
