The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has appointed three key figures to its National Working Committee (NWC). The appointments were made during a meeting held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, presided over by National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam. This decision aligns with Article 12.5 of the 2022 SDP Constitution and follows the mandate from the National Convention to fill vacant positions within the party.
Senator Ugochukwu Uba has been appointed as the Deputy National Chairman for the South. A prominent scholar and politician from Anambra State, Uba has a rich history of public service, having previously served as the Director-General and Honourable Commissioner in Anambra under the late Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife. He was also a distinguished Senator representing Anambra South from 2003 to 2007, where he played a pivotal role in the passage of the Cabotage Act.
Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar has been named the Deputy National Chairman for the North. Hailing from Gombe State, Abubakar is a respected statistician with advanced degrees in International Affairs and Political Economy. His previous roles include serving as the SDP’s pioneer National Secretary from 2010 to 2015 and as the party’s Governorship Candidate in Gombe State in 2011. He also held the position of pioneer Director-General of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Nigeria.
The third appointment is Mr. Hussani Ado Bello, who will serve as the National Financial Secretary. A chartered accountant from Kano State, Bello has extensive experience in both the federal and state civil services. He has also worked as a finance and tax consultant and has held various leadership roles within the SDP, including State Chairman of Kano in 2018 and Chairman of the Forum of SDP State Chairmen in 2020.
These appointments are expected to enhance the SDP’s operational capacity and strengthen its leadership framework. The newly appointed members of the NWC bring a wealth of experience and expertise that will be instrumental in advancing the party’s objectives and initiatives.
With these strategic appointments, the SDP aims to reinforce its commitment to democratic governance and effective leadership in Nigeria. The new leaders will assume their roles immediately, contributing to the party’s vision and mission as it prepares for future electoral challenges.
