Vice-President Kashim Shettima has commissioned 11.2 kilometres of major road projects and launched 230 mass transit vehicles in Katsina State.
Shettima commissioned the projects during a one-day official visit to Katsina, where he unveiled the commissioning plaque. The roads include the 4.8-kilometre dualised Kofar Sauri–Central Mosque Roundabout Road, the 2.4-kilometre dualised Central Police Station Junction–Kofar Kaura Underpass Road, and the newly constructed 4-kilometre Filin Polo–Ring Road.
The Vice-President also launched 30 buses powered by CNG and electric technology, alongside 200 electric tricycles as the first phase of the initiative. The Katsina State Government said the programme is part of its efforts to provide cleaner, more efficient and accessible public transportation.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda said the commissioning marked another milestone in his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure, renew urban areas and modernise public transportation. He said the road projects would improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, enhance road safety and create a more favourable environment for businesses and investment.
Radda said the three roads were among 12 major urban renewal projects being implemented in Katsina metropolis, designed to create an integrated road network rather than isolated roads. He added that the same approach was being extended to Daura and Funtua, while more than 240 kilometres of urban and rural roads were covered by ongoing infrastructure projects across the state.
On public transportation, Governor Radda said the buses would operate in Katsina, Daura and Funtua, with a main transport terminal and maintenance facility in Katsina and mini-terminals in Daura and Funtua. He said 40 modern bus stops were also being provided across the three locations, with facilities including Wi-Fi and solar-powered systems to improve passenger convenience.
The Governor said the 200 electric tricycles were launched as part of the state’s plan to deploy 500 electric tricycles. He said the initiative would create opportunities for transport operators, young people, vehicle technicians and other businesses. Radda commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, government agencies, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders for their contributions, while appreciating the people of Katsina State for their patience and cooperation during the construction works.
