Retired Colonel Abdulmumini Aminu, a former Military Governor of Borno State, has said the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, in 2027 is necessary to sustain ongoing development projects and government programmes.
Abdulmumini, who served as Military Governor of Borno State from August 1985 to August 1988 during the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, made the statement in an interview with Hikaya Newspaper. He said Nigeria had recorded some progress between Tinubu’s election in 2023 and 2026, particularly in infrastructure and programmes designed to support citizens.
He said the APC-led government had undertaken projects including the construction and rehabilitation of roads, railway lines, schools and hospitals, as well as vocational training programmes for women and young people. He added that some beneficiaries were also provided with equipment to enable them to apply the skills they acquired and earn a living.
The retired military officer also commended the efforts of the Tinubu and Radda administrations to improve security, stressing that addressing insecurity was not the responsibility of government alone. He said citizens also had an important role to play by providing relevant information and cooperating with security agencies.
Speaking on the 2027 elections, Abdulmumini said Nigerians, particularly those in northern Nigeria, should continue to support the APC. He said the activities of Tinubu and Radda were among the reasons he believed they deserved continued public support. “Governor Radda and President Tinubu are doing reasonably well; opposition politics is why their efforts are not being appreciated,” he said.
He added that the APC’s control of several states through its elected governors could strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, this could help the party mobilise support across different levels.
Abdulmumini also criticised some past comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is among the opposition figures challenging the APC administration and has been associated with a 2027 presidential bid under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He referred to Atiku’s previous position on the proposed sale of NNPC to private investors and also questioned his movement between different political parties over the years.
Retired Colonel Abdulmumini Aminu urged Nigerians, particularly those in northern Nigeria, to strengthen unity and support for the government to enable it to continue implementing policies and programmes that could benefit citizens. He said sustained engagement between government and communities, as well as cooperation in addressing the country’s challenges, remained important for achieving a better future.
