Shettima Launches Inaugural Flight for 2025 Hajj in Owerri

Vice President Kashim Shettima of Nigeria has officially launched the inaugural flight for the 2025 Hajj exercise at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that this historic event marks the first time a Hajj flight will depart from the southeastern region of Nigeria, reflecting a significant milestone for the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the local Muslim community.

Upon his arrival, Shettima was warmly welcomed by NAHCON Chairman, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, along with various officials, including state commissioners and members of the Aviation Committee. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who emphasized the importance of this occasion for Nigerian Muslims.

In his speech, Professor Usman expressed his excitement about the event, highlighting the spiritual significance of the Hajj journey for thousands of Nigerian pilgrims. He noted that the inaugural flight would carry 315 pilgrims from Abia, Bayelsa, and Imo states, and praised Governor Uzodinma for his efforts in promoting religious harmony in the region.

Usman also provided updates on the total number of registered pilgrims, stating that arrangements for their reception in Madinah and Jeddah airports are well underway. He assured attendees that the airlift operation aims to be completed within two weeks, demonstrating NAHCON’s commitment to efficient logistics and pilgrim welfare.

The NAHCON Chairman highlighted recent achievements, including stabilizing Hajj costs despite global inflation and securing premium accommodation for VIP pilgrims in Mina. He also mentioned the financial support provided to tour operators, which facilitated timely camp bookings and allowed for additional pilgrim registrations.

As the ceremony concluded, Usman urged pilgrims to remain vigilant and adhere to guidelines during their journey. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their support, emphasizing their dedication to the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims. The event culminated with wishes for a successful and spiritually fulfilling Hajj for all participants.
