Mass Defection Hits Katsina as Governor Radda Welcomes 40,000 New APC Members

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has received over 40,000 card-carrying members from various opposition parties into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection took place at the State Government House, where Governor Radda pledged inclusive leadership and directed officials to integrate the new members into APC activities.

The Governor emphasized that the decision of the new members to join the APC strengthens the party’s resolve to build a greater Katsina state. He encouraged the new members to join the APC-led government in accelerating development programs that are transforming the state.

Leading the group of defectors were former Deputy Speakers of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Yakubu Idris Dan Chafa and Alhaji Hassan Suleiman Rawayau. Other notable figures who defected included Alhaji Isah Hamisu Dandume of the APP and Alhaji Musa Gafai, Chairman of Gafai Communication and former PDP aspirant for the Federal House of Representatives.

According to Alhaji Ya’u Umar Gwajo Gwajo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, the defectors represent a broad coalition from across the political spectrum. This mass defection is seen as a significant boost to the APC in Katsina State.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that speaking on behalf of the defectors, former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Rabiu Gambo Bakori, cited internal conflicts within opposition parties and Governor Radda’s credible electoral victory in 2023 as key factors in their decision to join the APC.

Governor Radda’s leadership style and development initiatives have been praised by many, including his efforts to promote unity and discipline within the APC. His administration has also launched various empowerment programs, such as the recent initiative to empower 6,100 vulnerable women.²

The mass defection is a significant development in Katsina State politics, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the state’s political landscape. Governor Radda’s commitment to inclusive leadership and development will likely continue to shape the state’s future.

As Governor Radda continues to welcome new members to the APC, his administration’s focus on development and unity is expected to remain a top priority. With the 2025 elections approaching, this mass defection could have significant implications for the state’s political future.
