FG seeks stronger media partnership

The Federal Government has called for stronger cooperation between the media, government institutions, and other stakeholders to fight the growing problem of disinformation and misinformation in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this call on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day event held at Radio House. He said joint efforts are necessary to protect public trust and ensure national stability.

The minister said the government is committed to press freedom, describing it as a basic right under the Constitution. He also highlighted Nigeria’s partnership with UNESCO to establish the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja, which aims to help citizens better understand and evaluate information.

He urged journalists to maintain professionalism and follow ethical standards, noting that press freedom must be used responsibly. The government also restated its readiness to work with the media, civil society, and global partners to build a strong information system that supports democracy and national unity.
