Retired Police Officers Protest Over Pensions: IGP Urges Calm, Assures Ongoing Reforms

The Nigeria Police Force has acknowledged the planned peaceful protest by retired police officers over pension-related grievances, set to hold on Monday, July 21, 2025.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that while recognizing the legitimacy of some concerns, the Force expressed disappointment over efforts by certain individuals to politicize the issue and spread misinformation aimed at discrediting the government and undermining the leadership of the Police.

In a statement issued by the Force Headquarters, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) affirmed the ongoing commitment of the Police to the welfare of its retirees, noting that the demand to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has persisted since 2014. Despite consistent efforts by past and present IGPs to address the issue, the challenge remains unresolved due to legal, financial, and administrative limitations. The IGP clarified that exiting the scheme falls outside the Police’s direct control, as it is governed by national laws and inter-agency policies.

The statement revealed that projections show improved pension outcomes for future retirees under the CPS and stressed the need for a practical, forward-looking approach. Meanwhile, the current Police leadership is implementing interim measures, such as deploying internally generated revenue to supplement pensions and engaging the private sector to support targeted welfare initiatives for retirees. These efforts, the IGP said, are already yielding progress and reflect a balanced approach of advocacy and action.

Emphasizing the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to ensure the protest is peaceful, secure, and free from disruption or political hijack. He called on serving officers to maintain professionalism and show respect to retired colleagues. “This is not just a protest—it is a test of our maturity, discipline, and values,” the IGP concluded, urging officers to uphold institutional integrity while ensuring public order and safety throughout the demonstration.
